Chakra Ip, executive director of The 29 Principles, shared information with Mary Lawlor, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, regarding the continued crackdown against human rights lawyers by the Chinese government. Dozens of legal practitioners and scholars still remain in detention or disappearance. The release of these human rights defenders does not mean the end of persecution, as many are still closely watched by the government, with some placed in prolonged home arrest even after release. The regime also utilises administrative issues such as revocation of practice licenses to hold sway on defenders’ livelihood.
