Words from recipient of “709 Human Rights Lawyers’ Award” Chow Hang-tung

Law is made of words. When words are not free, the law is not free. The rule of law becomes but a facade for the rule of force, the force of who controls words.
Therefore as lawyers, the fight for free speech is our fight. So is the fight to defend, or build, the democratic institutions that underpin it. The dignity of our profession demands this.
This is why the three of us [three award recipients] must do what we have done. This is why many of our colleagues, past and present, near and far, have always stood at the forefront in the fight for free speech and democracy. And more will join, I am sure of it.
Law is in the end made by people. Whether it would degenerate into a tool of oppression, or become a guardian of our highest principles is, ultimately, a result of human actions. In other words, it depends on us. So let’s speak up and be heard, both in court and beyond.
I am honoured to be in this fight together with all of you.
