UN Human Rights Committee has just published the Concluding Observations on Hong Kong. In Par. 37-38, the concern on lawyers is addressed. The Committee also urged the authority to punish perpetrators who harass, intimidate or attack lawyers after a prompt, independent and thorough investigation.
The recent legal aid reform also caught members' attention: Hong Kong should take effective measures, including by establishing independent legal aid authority, to guarantee the rights to access to timely and competent legal aid & to counsel of one’s choice, including those charged under National Security Law.
The 29 Principles welcomes this report and urges the authorities to take the measurement suggested and protect the lawyers of Hong Kong.
