Legal representation is a fundamental right, along with a right to silence, bail applications, translations, good treatment amongst others, according to the UN’s Basic Principles on the Role of Lawyers.
However, we have seen that in repeated cases in China, and now in Hong Kong with the National Security Law, defendants are denied access to these basic rights.
